Ed Partners Perspectives

CALLI Collaboration Capstone

Over the course of five academic years (2016-2021), 27 participating districts focused on deepening their learning and improving student outcomes in one of our three focal areas: High School Math, Academic Language and Early Literacy. With the support of Ed Partners’ program managers, teams engaged in deep learning and systems improvement work that will allow them to build a culture of continuous improvement, learn new skills, refine systems and tools, share best practices, learn from expert thought partners, and implement dynamic new strategies – all in service of improving outcomes for students.

This fall we sent a video production crew across the state to capture the reactions of participants and to assess the impact of CALLI on their districts, teachers and students.

From Evidence to Improved Student Outcomes: Connecting Research, Policy, and Practice

What works to support students through the pandemic? How can the state and local districts best meet the needs of newcomer English Learners to California? What strategies can policymakers and district leaders implement to build bridges between a child’s early learning experiences and the early grades? Researchers, policymakers, and educators ask these kinds of questions all the time and yet making timely, effective connections between research, policy, and practice can seem like a herculean task.

Join us for a conversation with leaders in education research, policy, and practice on the challenges and opportunities – including showcasing models being developed here in California – to bridge the divide and bring evidence to hear for the benefit of children. Panelists include Tanya Lieberman, Chief Consultant, Assembly Education Committee; Alix Gallagher, Director Strategic Partnerships, PACE; Naomi Obdrasek, Senior Researcher and Policy Institute; and Laura Schwalm, Chief of Staff, California Education Partners; facilitated by Samantha Tran, Senior Managing Director Education, Children Now.

District Spotlight: Planada Elementary School District

We would like to highlight Planada Elementary School District, specifically the work being done at Cesar Chavez Middle School, who are part of the 8th Grade On Track Collaboration. Planada is located about 20 minutes southeast of Merced in the Central Valley. The team is comprised of a the Superintendent,  Principal, Academic Counselor, Special Education Coordinator, Resource, ELA, Math, and Avid teachers. The Planada Improvement team has made incredible progress on implementing a system that frequently monitors students with Ds or Fs to mitigate student failure. They meet every 3-4 weeks and review progress report grade data to determine which students require academic counseling, Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention to prevent Ds and/or Fs from becoming final by the quarter marking period. Each student is accounted for at Planada, which directly impacts student achievement. Next on their plate is to connect to Dr. Doug Reeves’ work on Grading so they can start testing change ideas on grading as they head into the the new year. The Planada Improvement team continues to progress on improving academic outcomes for their students, all the while doing so with humor and sense of community.
