The Milpitas team is now in Year 2 of their three-year Pre-K to 3 Coherence Collaboration (P3CC) and is making steady progress in expanding their P3CC work beyond the initial improvement team.
Last year, the team built a strong foundation by deepening their understanding of the 4-phase unit planning process and open tasks. They then began sharing this learning through staff meetings and release day planning, bringing in grade-level teams from across multiple sites. This helped position early adopters as leaders and created momentum across the district. This year, they’ve continued to scale the work by using structures like staff meetings, learning walks, and collaborative planning days to engage more teachers in the work.
As this effort has expanded, early signs of impact are emerging in classrooms. Teachers are seeing students more engaged in math, using academic language, sharing multiple strategies, and building on each other’s thinking. The team also reports an increase in student confidence, stronger participation, and deeper reasoning, with students taking more ownership of their learning and explaining their ideas more clearly when engaging in math.
The team is also beginning to track impact more intentionally by looking at student work, classroom observations, exit tickets, and student discussions. Early indicators suggest that as more teachers adopt these practices, students are experiencing more meaningful and accessible math learning. While still early in the scaling process, Milpitas is laying the groundwork for lasting improvements in both teaching and student outcomes.
